Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australia’s pre-eminent family owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home in the Hunter Valley to the Limestone Coast (SA) and Heathcote (VIC). Headed up by fourth generation family member Bruce Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s is home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. With the fifth generation, Chris, Jane and John, involved in the business, Tyrrell’s will continue to remain family owned with the simple philosophy of producing high quality wine that people love to drink.

The vines in the HVD vineyard were planted in 1908 and form the “Sign Post Block”. The vineyard lies between two small creeks that are fed from a spring in the Brokenback range. The vines are rarely stressed and their roots are almost continuously in water. Great soil moisture from the previous growing season meant that the vineyard saw it’s best season in years. Kind weather over Christmas ensured even ripening and flavour development in the bunches. Classic HVD Semillon showing lifted floral aromatics and tightly structured palate with considerable length and a great balance with it’s clean, soft acid structure.

The HVD vineyard was planted in 1908. Despite a touch of spritz, this has started down its development path with the first hint of honey joining the lively, tangy, lemon/lemongrass flavours, the acidity crisp and reassuring. Drink by: 2030; Price: $35.00; Date Tasted: Feb 2015; Alcohol: 11%; Rating: 95 Points and Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion

The more I taste the fruits of this vineyard, the more I adore it. And look at the price!. This year is a bright and crisp expression with crunchy apple fruit and mouth watering acidity. It’s loaded up with everything - great concentration and richness, fine minerality and a long finish. Rating: 94 Points; Tyson Stelzer
