Established in 1896, Te Mata Estate remains family owned, producing internationally recognized wines exclusively from its Hawke's Bay vineyards. The Estate's ownership varied frequently until John and Wendy Buck acquired it in 1978. John and Wendy instigated a twenty-year development program, which commenced with the restoration of the original winery building and the replanting of all of the original vineyards, as well as the acquisition of new vineyard sites.

Te Mata winery has been ranked 'Top Winery in New Zealand' evidenced by the consistent quality of the Coleraine and Awatea Cabernet Merlot wines, the Bull Nose Syrah and the Elston Chardonnay.

Limit one dozen per customer. (2014 reviews) Brilliant, light straw-yellow colour with green-gold hues. This has a tightly concentrated nose with real depth, showing fresh citrus fruits entwined with white stonefruits, unfolding layers of complexing mealy and nutty barrel-ferment notes. The aromatics are detailed and refined in expression. Medium-full bodied, tightly concentrated and elegantly presented flavours of vibrant and sweetly rich citrus and yellow stonefruits are melded with layers of mealy, creamy and nutty oak. The barrel-ferment textures are smooth in texture, but enlivened by fine, crisp acidity. This has elegance, concentration and finesse at the core, with linear power and drive. The wine carries to a very long citrus and mealy finish with emerging toasty nuances. This has elegance and zest, concentration, and complex layers that grow in richness with finesse. It will develop over the next 5-6+ years. Rating: 19.5-/20.0; Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

Exotic, engaging and utterly fabulous; this exceptionally reliable label delivers a stunning wine packed with apricot, floral, white peach and just a whisper of vanilla. The palate offers huge appeal, showing excellent mid palate weight and rich texture, perfectly framed by bright acidity. Opulent yet firmly structured, and very long on the finish. At its best: now to 2020. Rating: 95 Points; Sam Kim; Wine Orbit
