Ordinarily, we would be fortunate enough to feature two or three 97 Point rated Pinots each year, especially given that on almost all occasions, said wines are made in miniscule amounts, almost always a few hundred cases at best and almost always they aren't cheap. What we have here is a new StarDozen featuring 3 bottles each of four Pinots from Australia's best cool climate Pinot Noir spots in the Yarra Valley, Adelaide Hills and Geelong. All wines rating 97 Points with James Halliday and all significantly below their retail price. This is a rare and extremely limited opportunity.

Ashton Hills Estate Pinot Noir 2013
The fragrant, gently spiced bouquet and palate are akin to a miniature painting, exquisite in its detail; complete harmony is the key to this wine, its length exceptional, extended by the forest berry/forest floor overlay on the finish. Drink by: 2025 Date tasted:12/Mar/2015. Price:$60.00. Alcohol:14%; Rating: 97 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion

Giant Steps Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015
Shares the superb colour of its siblings; here, generosity takes the stage with richness and tannins woven into the superabundant red and black fruit by invisible mending. A brilliant wine, the lower Yarra Valley refusing to take a backward step. Rating: 97 Points; James Halliday, Weekend Australian

Hillcrest Premium Pinot Noir 2013
50% new French oak. Extremely deep colour; one of those rare pinots that are full-bodied, but not clumsy; resounding with drumbeats of black cherry and satsuma plum, quality oak also playing a role. It makes only one request: like '99 Burgundies, give me as much time as your heart, wallet and other basic instincts will allow. The high quality cork should go the distance. Price: $70.00; Alcohol: 12.8%; Drink By: 2030; Rating: 97 Points; James Halliday

By Farr Sangreal Pinot Noir 2014
Clones 114 and 115 planted '94, believed to have mutated into a single 'Sangreal' clone. Always made with 50-70% whole bunches, and 60-70% new oak maturation for 18 months. Typical bright, deep hue; the bouquet exudes flowers (roses, violets), spices and a throbbing heartbeat of gently savoury dark fruits; the palate magically twists all these characters into a single silver-coated stream of red and blue fruits, the tannins no more than background haze, oak a slender frame. A gorgeous pinot of the highest category. Drink By: 2024; Price: $83.00; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value; James Halliday Wine Companion
