As you may imagine, of all the varieties, Shiraz scoring 97 Points with James Halliday are the most sought after. Despite 9769 wines making the cut for his annual Wine Companion, there are still relatively few that climb the mountain that is 97 Points. What we have here is the StarDozen: James Halliday 97 Point Shiraz Collection featuring 3 bottles each from 4 renowned producers. This is a rare and extremely limited opportunity.

The StarDozen consists of the following:

3 bottles       Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2015
3 bottles       Turkey Flat Barossa Shiraz 2014
3 bottles       Woods Crampton Frances & Nicole Eden Valley Shiraz 2015
3 bottles       Seppelt St Peters Shiraz 2014

Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2015
From central and southern (the latter warmer) parts of the Adelaide Hills, hand-picked, part destemmed, part whole bunch, open-fermented with gentle plunging. The colour is bright, the bouquet full of red fruits, darker fruit notes and delicious pepper and spice nuances. These characters flow through to the medium-bodied palate of Shaw + Smith's most consistently outstanding wine, the '15 vintage making it seem so easy. Drink by: 2030; Price: $46.00; Date Tasted: Feb 2017; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion

Turkey Flat Barossa Shiraz 2014
All of the mainstream red winemaking options are used, demanding (and receiving) unrelenting attention to detail. This is a hero Barossa Valley shiraz, with great colour, profound complexity, yet retaining a calm personality within its array of primary, fresh flavours. Drink by: 2044; Price: $47.00; Date Tasted: Feb 2016; Alcohol: 14.1%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion

Woods Crampton Frances & Nicole Eden Valley Shiraz 2015
Utterly convincing colour to a wine that effortlessly captures the imagination of those who seek to understand and describe it. It achieves this through a medium-bodied palate overflowing with black fruits and an occasional lightning flash of red berries, focused yet supple tannins, oak like Le Carre's Constant Gardener. Drink To: 2045; Price: $60.00; Alcohol: 14.0%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday; Wine Companion

Seppelt St Peters Shiraz 2014
The run of scintillating form continues. This builds complexity in lockstep with depth, its black pepper, clove and gun smoke notes sunk deep into the perfectly ripened, smooth-skinned, cherry-plum fruit. Tannin, firm but exquisitely fine, is but one of its many exemplary qualities. A sensational wine. Drink By: 2040; Price: $80.00; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Wine; James Halliday; Wine Companion
