Ordinarily, we would be fortunate enough to feature one or two 97 Point rated Shiraz's each year, especially given that on almost all occasions, said wines are made in miniscule amounts, almost always a few hundred cases at best and almost always they aren't cheap. What we have here is the StarDozen: 97 Point Shiraz Collection, featuring 3 bottles each from 4 renowned producers. All wines rating 97 Points from Australia's leading wine critics and all significantly below their retail price. This is a rare and extremely limited opportunity.

The StarDozen consists of the following:

3 bottles       Hemera Home Block Shiraz 2017
3 bottles       Deep Woods Shiraz et al 2020
3 bottles       Chalk Hill Clarendon Syrah 2018
3 bottles       SC Pannell Merrivale Shiraz 2021

Hemera Home Block Shiraz 2017
Exclusively sourced from the estate Block 3A, vinification identical to its siblings with one exception: it is matured in predominantly new French oak, and I find the result perfect. Glossy black cherry and blackberry fruit take centre stage, oak left to the sides in a very good support role. Drink to: 2037; Price: $60.00; Date: August 2020; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday; Wine Companion

Deep Woods Shiraz et al 2020
Primary fruit aromas of plums, raspberries and ripe blueberries mixed with aniseed and notes of spice from the use of oak. The palate exhibits a complex mixture of spice and fruit. White pepper, juicy plums and ripe red berries are all evident and are well supported by seasoned French oak. The tannins are soft, round, persistent and very fleshy.
Gold Medal & 97 Points - Royal Adelaide Wine Show 2021

Chalk Hill Clarendon Syrah 2018
A fine example of temperate-grown shiraz. The bouquet pulsates with black cherry, spice, licorice and pepper, the palate opening with a fanfare of dark fruits and finishes with fine-grained tannins. The drinking window is open, and won't close for decades. Drink to: 2048; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star & Top 100 Wines of 2020; James Halliday; Top 100 Wines of 2021

SC Pannell Merrivale Shiraz 2021
Very deep, almost opaque purple colour, almost glass-staining. The bouquet is reserved and shy, latent and dense, brooding and powerful—and it's the same on the palate. Tar, graphite, ironstone and black soil. A big, bold, robust shiraz, full-bodied and muscular, with tremendous middle-palate fruit sweetness, richness and masses of ripe, smooth tannins. Impressive concentration and persistence. The regional fruit shines like a beacon. A heroic red wine with a great future. (From the home block, planted to an old clone in 1970) Date Tasted: Oct 2022; Drink: 2022-2046; Price: $45.00; Alcohol: 14.7%; Rating: 97 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review
