As you may imagine, of all the varieties, Shiraz scoring 97 Points with James Halliday are the most sought after. Despite 9769 wines making the cut for his annual Wine Companion, there are still relatively few that climb the mountain that is 97 Points. What we have here is the StarDozen: James Halliday 97 Point Shiraz Collection featuring 3 bottles each from 4 renowned producers. This is a rare and extremely limited opportunity.

The StarDozen consists of the following:

3 bottles        Clonakilla O’Riada Shiraz 2015
3 bottles        Torzi Matthews 1903 Old Vines Shiraz 2015
3 bottles        Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2015
3 bottles        Turkey Flat Barossa Shiraz 2014

Clonakilla O’Riada Shiraz 2015
A strikingly fragrant and perfumed effort from Clonakilla, this wine captures you instantaneously. It is superbly constructed, aromatically fragrant, perfumed and darkly fruited; on the palate spice, superfine tannins and then the finish that just lingers and expands. Drink to: 2040; Price: $45.00; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday, Wine Companion

Torzi Matthews 1903 Old Vines Shiraz 2015
113yo dry grown vines at Moppa Hill yielding 1.2 tonnes per acre, hand-picked, open, wild fermentation, matured for 14 months in French oak 10% new. A wonderful wine from a very old vineyard made with sensitivity, keeping all the focus on the fruit, not the oak or the tannins. The decision to use 40% whole bunches was inspired, injecting a perfume to the bouquet and freshness to a palate that is no more than medium-bodied. Drink by: 2045; Price: $50.00; Date Tasted: Dec 2016; Alcohol: 14.2%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday; James Halliday Wine Companion

Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2015
From central and southern (the latter warmer) parts of the Adelaide Hills, hand-picked, part destemmed, part whole bunch, open-fermented with gentle plunging. The colour is bright, the bouquet full of red fruits, darker fruit notes and delicious pepper and spice nuances. These characters flow through to the medium-bodied palate of Shaw + Smith's most consistently outstanding wine, the '15 vintage making it seem so easy. Drink by: 2030; Price: $46.00; Date Tasted: Feb 2017; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion

Turkey Flat Barossa Shiraz 2014
All of the mainstream red winemaking options are used, demanding (and receiving) unrelenting attention to detail. This is a hero Barossa Valley shiraz, with great colour, profound complexity, yet retaining a calm personality within its array of primary, fresh flavours. Drink by: 2044; Price: $47.00; Date Tasted: Feb 2016; Alcohol: 14.1%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
