Given that 97 Point Halliday rated wines are both rare and relatively dearer than lower rated wines, the StarDozens have been a great way to sample more of them rather than having to find and even commit to larger volumes. Despite over 6000 wines making the cut for his annual Wine Companion, there are still relatively few that climb the mountain that is 97 Points. What we have here is the StarDozen: James Halliday 97 Point Chardonnays featuring 3 bottles each of Chardonnays which not only scored 97 Points with James Halliday but also show the diversity of this variety with examples from Margaret River, Southern Tasmania, Mornington Penunsula and the Yarra Valley. All wines rating 97 Points with James Halliday and all significantly below their retail price. This is a rare and extremely limited opportunity.

Giant Steps Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2015
A great Upper Yarra vineyard now owned by De Bortoli. Lifted fruit blossom aromas with a wraith of barrel ferment; the palate is exquisitely balanced, with the classic white peach/grapefruit duo filling the mouth without even trying. Drink by: 2029; Date tasted: 30 Mar 2016; Price: $45.00; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 97 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion

Pipers Brook Estate Chardonnay 2014
Hand-picked from high density blocks up to 40yo, wild-fermented in French oak (10-15% new), a small portion mlf. This is a lovely chardonnay; its bouquet provides gently funky complexity, and the wine glides across the palate as if it had ball bearing moccasins on its feet. The fruit/oak balance is perfect, the fruit flavours equally split between stone fruit, apple and citrus. Drink by: 2025; Price: $34.00; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 97 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion

Scorpo Mornington Chardonnay 2012
It takes excellence and challenges it to reach higher. It's complex and flinty with grapefruit and white peach flavours running pure and bright from start to finish. Fennel and cream notes play throughout, as do struck match/sulphide characters. 4 years young. Brilliant. Drink by: 2020; Price: $45.00; Date Tasted: March 2016; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 97 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion

Singlefile Family Reserve Denmark Chardonnay 2015
Selected each year on a row-by-row basis, hand-picked, chilled overnight, whole bunch-pressed, fermented in French barriques (40% new), matured for 8.5 months, a small portion (less than 10%) undergoing mlf. A very, very different wine to its Great Southern sibling, with intense grapefruit leading white peach through the bouquet and into a complex palate. One of those all-too-few wines that manage to combine elegance with intensity and complexity, notes of cashew and cream swirling around in the background. Price: $50.00; Rating: 97 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
