Shaw + Smith is an alliance between cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith. Their aim is to make contemporary, high quality wines that are outstanding examples of their type made from grapes grown in the Adelaide Hills. Shaw + Smith specialise in grape varieties suited to the cooler climate of the Adelaide Hills, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay & Shiraz.
For long accepted as the benchmark for Adelaide Hills sauvignon blanc, and you don't have to go past the bouquet to figure out why: just about every tropical fruit you can imagine is on display from custard apple at one extreme, kiwi fruit and green pineapple at the other (Michael Hill-Smith rejects gooseberry on the basis this means cape gooseberry, rarely encountered in Australia). It all adds up to a complete wine made to be enjoyed until the queue forms for the next release. With the 27th release of this benchmark Hills (and Australian) sauvignon blanc, the crew behind it believes it’s in the top handful of the best. The 2016 vintage has delivered a fabulous citrus zest to more varietally familiar (in this case, well-tempered) tropical fruit salad with passionfruit notes. The palate zings with pure squeezed lemon and grapefruit juices, and the finish is textured and salivating. Tony Love; Herald Sun, September 2016
Many people view this wine as Australia’s premier sauvignon blanc, and, given this release, they have a strong argument. It’s very pure, with ripe varietal characteristics of gooseberry, lantana blossom and lime. The well balanced palate is bursting with flavour and life. 4½ Wine Wise, August 2016; Lester Jesberg
