During 160 years of winemaking, Seppelt has built a reputation of innovation and unswerving dedication to quality. The Seppelt philosophy involves harnessing the strengths of each viticultural region to create varietally and regionally expressive wines of great character. Seppelt has had more experience with this unique Australian wine style than any other winemaker. Although there are no precise records, it appears the winery was experimenting with sparkling red wines as far back as the 1890s.

12 months in French Oak Vats and Tanks. Deep red with crimson hues. The nose shows dark fruits, fresh red berries and chocolate. Vibrant and bright dark fruits and fresh fig with a fine sparkling bead. Flesh tannin and integrated oak gives the wine density and structure. Drinking well now while fresh and bright but can benefit from short term cellaring.

Seppelt Original is defined by a mood of calm, effortless, understated character that characterises the medium-bodied fruit of Grampians and Heathcote. It's savoury and spicy, with notes of pepper and fresh leather over a core of elegant black plum and black cherry fruit. Tannins are firm, fine and mineral and will appreciate a few years to soften and integrate. Not just fruit sweetness and bubbles, a very well rendered version of the wine, with dryness to finish, thankfully. Quite rich, a touch porty in scent but forgivable with its bright floral character and sweet spice chiming in. Palate is foamy, broad, sweet and then tangy and fresh. Spicy is another good word. And the texture is almost tactile prickly spicy despite the wash of foamy bubbles. Finishes with a tickle of sweet cranberry tangy acidity and powdery dryness. Yum!
