SC Pannell Grenache 2014
96 Points – Top 100 – James Halliday
SC Pannell wines is a small, family owned winery founded 2004 by Stephen Pannell and his wife Fiona Lindquist. The winery was realised to focus on Stephen's passion for the McLaren Vale region and its ability to produce dry - grown and environmentally sustainable Shiraz and Grenache. Grenache, or Garnacha, is the variety that I am most fond of from McLaren Vale. Given our warm, Mediterranean climate, it grows as well here as any of the most revered Grenache wine regions of the world including the Southern Rhône of France, Priorat in Spain and Italy’s Sardinia. – Steve Pannell
This Grenache is sourced from a single vineyard of 70 year-old vines that are simply managed, without pesticides, to ensure the optimal expression of the fruit.
Hand-picked from 72yo bush vines, open-fermented, 14 months maturation in used French hogsheads. Bright, clear colour; quality grenache picked at precisely the right time has resulted in a wine with perfectly pitched red fruits, supple yet savoury tannins, and passing hints of herbs and chocolate; the tannin support is perfect, adding to the savoury nuances that are ever-present in the wine; poise and balance. Rating: 96 Points; Drink by: 2029; Price: $55; Date Tasted: May 2015; Alcohol: 14%; Top 100 Wines of 2015 - James Halliday; Weekend Australian
