PHI Yarra Valley Sauvignon 2007

PHI is a new joint venture between the De Bortoli and Shelmerdine families. The fruit comes from the Lusatia Park vineyard located at Woori Yallock. Very snazzy packaging. The range is comprised of pinot noir, sauvignon and chardonnay. The website link below has plenty of information for those of a curious disposition.

Complex lees aromas with faints of creamy gooseberry. Intense flavours of lees and nectarine with texture, nuttiness and finesse. When optimum flavour is achieved the fruit is hand harvested, hand sorted and whole bunch crushed. The juice is allowed to settle overnight and is racked to older casks with all solids but the dust from the vineyard. The juice is allowed to complete fermentation with indigenous yeast over a 3 week period. Some of the barrels undergo natural fermentation and many malolactic fermentation before sulphuring and lees stirring.

Subdued and sophisticated with aromas of unripe pineapple, citrus, jasmine, flint, herb and spice. Subtle and superb. On the palate it is light and fine boned yet deep and satisfying. It offers citrus, fresh pineapple, green melon, dried herb, mineral and creamed honey flavours and combines a soft glossy feel with a dry flinty texture and juicy pithy grapefruity acidity. Finishes dry and long. A remarkable wine from start to finish. Rated : 96 Points; Alcohol : 12%; Price : $42; Closure : Screwcap; Drink : 2007 - 2010; Gary Walsh; Winorama

This wine should not be labelled "sauvignon blanc', it should have a sticker on it that says "Lustatia Park Vineyard- and nothing more. The wine is a voice of its site; the grape is merely the vehicle for the delivery of the shape of the place...it turns the volume down to place of peaceful elegance and subtle grandeur.
