Houghton Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Houghton Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

If you have an aversion to big statements, now would be a good time to tune out because I have not seen a better Australian Cab Sav than this. I have seen the wine on two occasions and even broken my own rule of looking for something wrong with it in order to justify the ‘critic’ in me. To no avail. This is a kaleidoscope of the most gorgeous bright fruit, mint slice biscuit and dried herb. The texture is quite unique with a flood of fruit in the mouth, balanced by drying tannins on an elongated finish. One out of the box. I would rate it in the ‘Perfect’ (98-100) zone. One may argue that at one hundred bucks (our price $89) it would need to be that good but that money would no longer be a blip on the Bordeaux radar and this wine is so much better than many a Bordeaux. 2010-2025; Quality: Perfect; BW; WineStar© August 2009

A world-class cabernet supremely elegant and tightly knit. Scented with a violet-like perfume of cassis, blackberries and fresh cedar/vanilla and dark chocolate oak, it reveals a hint of mint and dried herbs. It's long, smooth and pristine, delivering a deep and perfectly focused core of intense small black and red berries and dark plums superbly knit with tight-grained oak and firm, drying tannins. It lacks nothing in length, persistence, finishing with classic balance and structure.(19.3/97 points, YTD 2016-2024+) Jeremy Oliver

Wow. And it really needs no further introduction. Oh go on then. Wow! Fragrant and crammed solid with cherry and black fruit, a touch of mint and fine cedar oak. There’s a little eucalypt too along with the dark chocolate and black olive - the overall impression is of strength and savoury impact, without any excess or foolishness. Masses of perfectly ripe fine tannins and boom boom length. The power, intensity and control on display here elevates this wine to a higher level. It’s probably about as good as Australian Cabernet gets. Rated : 97 Points; Tasted : Sep09; Alcohol : 14%; Price : $105; Closure : Cork; Drink : 2014 - 2030; By Gary Walsh; The Wine Front

A beautiful wine in every respect; purity of classic varietal fruit; texture, structure and length all perfect; fine tannins and integrated oak. Rating 96 Points; Drink 2024 Date Tasted Nov 07 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2009

Ruby red in colour displaying rich sweet scents of black fruits. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry and plum are also evident with underlying crushed bay leaf. The palate has a silky, seamless texture with the flavours of black fruits.
