    Heemskerk Riesling 2007

    Heemskerk Riesling 2007

Fragrant and perfumed with apple pie (replete with crust and spice), passionfruit and white flowers. On the palate a softer, more textural Riesling, offering a chalky dryness with a slight creaminess and flavours of baking apple, spice, passionfruit and flint. The acidity is balanced and clean and it finishes dry with a lingering apple pie richness. Beautiful wine. Rated : 94 Points Tasted : Jun08 Alcohol : 12.5% Price : $40 Closure : Screwcap Drink : 2008 - 2012 Gary Walsh; Winorama

The historic Heemskerk label has been used and abused over the years but Foster’s has decided to revive it as a premium Tasmanian brand - and by the taste of the first releases, it looks like a very good move. This is some kind of riesling. It’s got all the passionfruit, apple and pineapple thrust I expect to see in a Tassie riesling but then it’s got more: some creaminess to the mouthfeel, a subtle breadiness, and oodles of palate length. This wine (unusual for a riesling) saw the inside of an old wooden cask for five months, during which it was left on its lees - hence the more exotic notes, both in feel and flavour. I’m a fan. It’s an exciting riesling. Drink: 2008-2014. 94 points. The Wine Front
