An elegant, smooth and silky cabernet blend whose dusty, floral perfume of violets, cassis, cedar and vanilla oak reveals undertones of dried herbs, mint and menthol. Full to medium weight, it’s long and vibrant, with intense flavours of mulberries, plums and blackberries backed by creamy oak and framed by powdery, bony tannins. It finishes with lingering minty dark fruits and nuances of menthol. (Barossa Valley, 93 points, drink 2014-2022) Jeremy Oliver. The colour is still diffuse, possibly shaken by transport shortly prior to tasting; the cool vintage accentuates the Bordeaux make-up; this is a wine to challenge rather than soothe you, but is certainly as varietally correct as possible. 14º alc. These are all low yielding vineyards that produce Cabernet of great depth. The very best of each vintage is then blended with selected varieties to create a multi-dimensional wine of great distinction. The 2002 vintage produced great Cabernet Sauvignon: the Barossa experienced the coolest summer on record, so that ripening conditions were perfect for this noble red wine variety. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 10% Shiraz and 8% Malbec. A very dark red. Quite a lot of action on the nose, with blackberries, brambly fruits, mulberries, dark chocolate, nutty oak, malt and Christmas spices like cinnamon and mixed spice. The palate is big, and quite youthful for a 5 year old wine, and showed more classic Cabernet characters, with red currants and capsicum, festive dry spices and with time, some leathery and earthy complexity. A blockbuster style (at least for me) with lovely length, still showing some firm tannins and a comforting fireside richness. Drink over the medium term.
