So much better than so many ‘dry whites’ at the same price. Green pear, citrus, apricot kernel and a few dried herbs, but perhaps ‘cooly fruity’ is a good way to describe it. It’s clean and refreshing with excellent fruit purity and a little bit of ‘mineral’, perhaps there’s a touch of sweetness to round out and balance, but feels pretty much dry and pulls that way with its gently herbal and sparkling finish. Well, maybe not ultra-complex, but so good to drink. Rated : 91 Points; Tasted : Jul12; Alcohol : 12.5%; Price : $13; Closure : Screwcap; Drink : 2012 - 2014; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
Sicily is home to some unusual and intensely flavoured grapes perfectly suited to the hot, volcanic, granite-sandy landscape. The catarratto grape is planted on the western coast, and produces light, dry, gently fruity whites. This example is ridiculously good value: as well as a sea-spray-fresh burst of lemon-pith zestiness, there’s some weight on the tongue and even a touch of pleasant grippiness. Try it with a traditional Sicilian dish such as couscous topped with grilled seafood. Max Allan
I could very happily live off the Fourth Wave portfolio, it’s got diversity, value and flavour. This Sicillian blend is a good example. Vibrant fruit jumps out the glass in a ripe, tropical vein, lots of melon, citrus and peach as well as aromatic florals and a bakers dough richness. It’s got that knock- it- back ease about the texture, peach, honey, and lots of ripe freshnes and tangy acids. Lingers nicely with cleansing acids, good all round quaffer. Wining Pom
Catarratto is the major white variety found on Sicily. It is said to have a family tie to garganega, found further north in Veneto, and used to make soave. In many ways it’s a weed. That is, there is too much of it, just as there is too much chardonnay in Australia and too much sauvignon blanc in New Zealand. Light on the nose, with very slight elderflower smell (to me). Not a great deal of flavour across the palate but there are flavours at the side of the palate with acidity carrying them, then more flavour towards the back and it slips quietly away. Take it to the table and the acid lifts it to a higher level, so best drunk with food. 90 points and worth its $13. Tony Keys; The Keys Report
