Inspired by the wines of France's Southern Rhone, Marmaduke balances the pepper and spiceyness of Shiraz, sweet fruit flavours of Grenache with the earthy, gamey influence of the torrid Mataro. The Estate Trinders Vineyard provides Shiraz grown in sandy soils, Mataro and Grenache are sourced from the gravel-based soils of the nearby McHenry Vineyard. The search for fully ripe flavours necessary for the Marmaduke style requires harvest in the latter part of the season when flavours and sugars climax and tannins soften. Deep ruby red. Fragrances of red currant, mulberries and blueberries are interwoven into the spicy characters of cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg. Much warmth and texture to the mouthfeel, deep and exciting with liquorice and cherry, allspice and violet. The youthful, vibrant, mid-weight palate displays the sweet fruit flavours of red cherry, plum and raspberry. There are hints of pencil shaving, warm cigar and mahogany-like nuances, all harmonized against the secondary expressions of chocolates and spice. This is a rich wine, full of hot flavours, jam and thick tarry fruit, a fiery mediterranean acidity and enticingly integrated tannins. A satisfying, savoury finish with lasting impressions of berries and cedary spice This vintage has more spicy aromatics and a more savoury texture than the 2004 due to the higher percentage of grenache in the blend. This wine is made in the classic Cotes du Rhone style. It has nose aromas of rich dark plums and blueberries with hints of five spice and musk sticks. The palate is plush with bright red berry fruit with subtle spice and a distinct clean finish. Made with early drinking in mind, but with the ability to age and mellow over the next three to five years. This is the only red wine in the Cape Mentelle range that isn’t grown in Magaret River; but it is made from grapes grown in Western Australia. The quality has been rising steadily and this is a beauty. This is almost impossible to beat in the ready to drink style. It’s so generous, fruity, dark and handsome that one sip and you start wondering how they can sell it so cheap - but who cares! It tastes of raspberries, boysenberries, dates and plums, a lick of vanillin oak adding a delicious smoothness. It had me going back for more! 92 Points; Campbell Mattinson; The Big Red Wine Book
