Forest Hill Great Southern Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Forest Hill Great Southern Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Deep red with a purple hue. Lifted aromas of dark berries with hints of plum and dark chocolate notes. Earthy undertones and savoury notes add complexity on the nose and subtle spices develop in the glass. Medium bodied with a firm rich mouth feel. Flavours of black berry, tobacco leaf and subtle earthy and herbaceous hints carry through onto the palate. Slightly dusty, chewy tannins are already well integrated with good mid-palate richness and definition. The Cabernet Sauvignon is certainly approachable now, and will age gracefully over the next 8 - 10 years.

Last year’s wine scored a whopping 97 points from Halliday while the Block 5 from the same vintage *only* scored 93 points in the latest book. Interesting. Haven’t tasted the standard Cabernet from 2007, though it would be nice to try them side by side. Lovely oak – creamy high quality with a bit of pipe tobacco, mint and a mix of blue and red berries. It’s medium weight yet deeply fruited, and while the acidity is slightly lemony, the tannins are a highlight – slight chalkiness to them but ripe and sexy. Length is excellent too. Very good wine. Stylish. Rated : 93 Points Tasted : Jul10 Alcohol : 14% Price : $28 Closure : Screwcap Drink : 2012 - 2018; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front

You would be hard pressed to find too many better selections of Cabernets in this price bracket than the ones making the final cut in this tasting. A super group. This is one of the best Cabernets from Forest Hill. Blackcurrant and light dusty oak with fine-grained tannins. Excellent Cabernet structure with the angular thread weaving through the tight core of fruit before revealing more luxurious qualities on the finish - Ray Jordan, The Great Red Tasting $25-$40, The West Australian.

A fine and fragrant wine, its elegance and crafted proportions underwriting its extreme length; cedar, cigar box, blackcurrant, cassis and a touch of black olive all coalesce. Screwcap. 14% alc. Rating 94 Points; Drink 2028 Date Tasted Jun 10; James Halliday Australian Wine Companion
