Blue Poles Merlot Cabernet Franc 2005

Our second vintage from our small vineyard in the heart of the Margaret River appellation, this wine provides us with great enjoyment and a bottling that builds on the initial 2004 release of the same Merlot / Cabernet Franc combination.  The process of blending these classic “Right Bank” Bordeaux varieties generates a wonderfully complex and fragrant wine rich in plums, cherry, chocolate with a highlight of exotic allspice.  The palate is fully integrated with great fruit flavours and fine tannins, giving in to a long delicious length. This wine would age gracefully for 4-7 years in a cool cellar. Winery Notes

It is much better than it’s predecessor. I do love a merlot/cabernet franc blend. My favourite wine is Cheval Blanc (although that is a cabernet franc/merlot blend) and this offers a somewhat more affordable expression of the grapes - being (roughly) around 1/20th of the price.

Aromas of cherry/raspberry, chocolate, baking spices, a touch of cedar oak and some more earthy tobacco overtones. A most charmingly aromatic and interesting smelling wine. On the palate medium bodied. A wine of some elegance and poise with flavours of cherries and plums, fresh raspberry, chocolate and black olive. Fine dry tannins and lively pippy acidity. Finishes with dry tannin and earthy red fruit flavours. Good length. Very stylish and unforced. A true claret style that does not rely on oak, alcohol or extract to make itself heard. A bargain at the price and a very strong buy recommendation from me. Rated : 92 Points; Alcohol : 12.7%; Price : $25; Closure : Screwcap; Drink : 2007 - 2012; Gary Walsh, Winorama

Blue Poles Margaret River Merlot Cabernet Franc 2005 screwcap; It's a wine of style, that's for sure. A wine that trips to its own beat. It's all dry chocolate and floral aromatics, matched in the mouth by a combination of oxidative sweetness and long, dry, ropey tannin, a combination that works very well. It's low in alcohol (12.7%) but totally ripe, its sense of balance and structure judged to a tee. It's an interesting drink young, and should be better in three years. Drink: 2007-2012. 90 points.
