    Provenance Pinot Noir 2007

    Provenance Pinot Noir 2007

Grown in the Moorabool Valley approximately 70km southwest of Melbourne our Pinot Noir vineyard has a southeast aspect and is planted in red-loam soils over a limestone base. These soils are well drained and grow vines of moderate vigour. Handpicked in the first week of March, 70% of the fruit was destemmed and barely crushed on top of the remaining 30% whole bunches in small open fermenters.

Brilliant, deep ruby red. A bouquet of great depth and generosity. Aromas suggestive of forest floor, lavender, plum and humus are evoked. Complexity will build with age. Sweet fruit flavours greet the front palate and are deftly carried on a finely balanced tannin/acid structure. Trademark Pinot Noir generosity of flavour blossoms on the mid-palate and carries through on a very long supple finish. This is age-worthy wine that can be drunk in youth for fruitfulness or confidently cellared to build aged complexities.

Scott Ireland and partner Jen Lilburn established Provenance Wines in 1997 as a natural extension of Scott’s years of winemaking experience, both here and abroad. Located in the Moorabool Valley, the winery team of Scott, Kirilly Gordon and Sam Vogel focus on the classics in a cool-climate sense. Fruit is sourced both locally within the Geelong region and further afield (when the fruit warrants selection). They are also major players in contract making for the Geelong region. James Halliday. 2007 Vintage; Bright, light crimson; elegant pinot, with delicious red fruit aromas, the palate fine and precise, the texture and balance perfect; outstanding length and aftertaste. Screwcap. 13.5% alc. Rating 96 Points Drink 2015 $29 Date Tasted Feb 09 James Halliday Wine Companion

Totally unrelated, other than sharing the same geographical region, this was a throwback to the great Bannockburn Pinots of 5 and 10 years ago. A bright, pretty red-purple, the nose shows complex aromas of spicy plum fruit, forest floor with hint of a savoury cherry like character. The palate shows another dimension, another layer of depth oscillating between juicy and savoury. The tannins are beautifully refined, it feels almost creamy in the mouth. It finishes with the classic peacock's tail burst of flavour that Halliday in particular often refers to. To display so much intensity yet retain a stack of elegance is a credit to the makers. Gorgeous stuff and a ridiculous price given I have seen wines three times the price this year that wouldn’t hold a candle to this. Now – 2018+; Quality: Excellent BW; WineStar© August 2009
