This is the wine worlds the dance of the seven veils and precisely the reason wine geeks can sit on a glass of wine for a number of hours. Made from Clarendon Shiraz it is the best example made under this labels short history. My reference to the dance is due to the way the wine reveals more and more as it breaths slowly teasing the drinker with beautiful luscious fruit aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla beans and a hint of Ribena. The aromas become more intense as the wine gets lower in the decanter, the coup de grace is a tantalising long finish with lovely drying tannins. Best of all, its attractiveness and approachability will have even non wine geeks very interested. It should further be noted that outside of WineStar customers, wine lovers domestically are likely to miss out on this as very few bottles find their way to the domestic market. We have secured a small amount, however it is only available to existing customers for the first week. Now-2020; Quality: Exceptional BW; WineStar© June 2007 Right on the style cue for this wine comes this luscious, seamless and finely integrated shiraz whose brooding, mocha-like aromas of dark plums, berries and black pepper reveal undertones of dried earth and charcuterie meats. Initially closed and introverted, it steadily opens layers and length of luscious black, briary fruit, spicy vanilla oak, all of which is framed handsomely by a drying cut of firm astringency. (McLaren Vale, $65 retail, approx., 19.1/96, drink 2016-2024+) Jeremy Oliver The 2004 Joseph Shiraz Angel Gully is even better than the 2003. This deep ruby/purple-hued beauty displays notes of blackberries, asphalt, flowers, and white pepper. Full-bodied, intense, and rich, with no hard edges, it can be enjoyed over the next 5-7 years. Wine Advocate # 167; Oct 2006 Robert Parker This fourth release of Shiraz from our ‘Angel Gully’ vineyard at Clarendon is the produce of superb, ripe grapes. The terrain limits vineyard plantings to fairly scattered pockets, and the soil is lean and stony. The vines from which the fruit is sourced begin at the highest point in the north-west corner of our Clarendon Property. This tiny patch of vines offers Shiraz of individuality and finesse. 2004 up at Clarendon was a marked vintage, giving us wine of great body and texture. The primary aromas are of rich raspberry, dark cherry and pepper. The flavours are generous but tightly packed, and all kept in shape by a mineral backbone. Layered background characters are subtly derived from the oak. The winemaking has been simple - traditional open fermenters are used with a combination of differently aged oaks, French, American and German. Keeping to the JOSEPH style, the texture is lush yet firm. Delicious drinking now, the 2004 Joseph ‘Angel Gully’ Shiraz has a cellaring potential of 10+ years. Winery Notes
