A cut above the standard '01 Petaluma Chardonnay. Tiers isn't heaps bigger than its sibling; instead it excels in finesse, though that doesn't mean it lacks power. The bouquet is elegant and subtly complex with a lovely interplay between oak and nectarine, apple and lime fruit notes. Touches of nuts, hard toffee and wheatmeal add complexity, and it finishes very long with dry austerity. Enjoy with pan-fried flounder. Huon Hooke & Ralph Kyte-Powell
