The new D.O. of Montsant encircles D.O. Priorato & the best sites are very reminiscent of its more famous neighbour. Dry, stony mountain soils (Llicorella) planted in the main to wonderful old Garnacha bush vines. The wines are wonderfully concentrated, highly minerale from the slatey soil & absolute bargains in world wine terms. Capçanes, a 'post-modern co-op' is the star property. Joven - garnacha w 20% syrah, held in tank for 9 months. Very good interplay between glycerol and mountain minerally acid. A simple, delicious wine of redcurrant, black tea, rosehips. Juicy with nice fruit tannin, fresh finish.
