This wine has enjoyed some amazing success in the last 5 years but the measure of any achievement in this industry is sustainability and if there is one thing the 2007 release proves above all, is that the quality is no fluke, it is here to stay. I missed the opportunity to try this on my recent trip to NZ but did get a swig of the brilliant top shelf Astrolabe Awatere Sauvignon Blanc 2007 (yet to land in Australia). Interestingly, I also read that Winemaker Simon Waghorn was reluctant to enter the wine in Shows conscious of the fact that he judges in many and was avoiding the conflict of interest jibes. Already with an International Wine Show Gold and 5 Stars from Winestate, I don't think he has too much to worry about. So I had to rough it and actually purchase a bottle of what must be said is WineStar's fave Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc. A terrifically balanced wine is my first impression with luscious tropical fruits and a present but never overpowering herbaceous element in the form of tomato leaf. It is such a fine line nowadays with Sav Blanc being too fruit driven or too 'green' but rather than tread wearily on the tight rope, Astro runs along it with the loveliest crisp acidic finish. Another winner; get on. Drink: Now – 2009; Quality: Excellent; BW, WineStar© November 2007 Intense, herbaceous aromas lead into a punchy, crisp wine with an array of tropical fruit, gooseberry and lime flavours, very pure, vibrant and searching. Flows well across the palate to a long, tangy finish. 5 Stars; Winestate Magazine Gold Medal - London International Wine Show This is one of N.Z.'s best producers of Sauvignon - Bob Campbell MW White and red currant leaf, gooseberry, lemon grass, jalapeno and lime peel aromas. Medium to full bodied wine with strong gooseberry and currant flavours, a hint of freshly-cut red capsicum, and a refreshingly smooth lingering finish. Best enjoyed when young and fresh, but has the potential to age gracefully, until early 2009. Winery Notes.
