Yalumba The Scribbler Cabernet Shiraz 2007

Yalumba The Scribbler Cabernet Shiraz 2007

‘The Scribbler’ pays homage to one of Yalumba’s most renowned wines ‘The Signature’ Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz, made continuously since 1962. ‘The Scribbler’ re-enforces our dedication to this wine style and celebrates its heritage. This wine is full depth red in colour with purple hues, displaying an aroma of brooding Barossa Cabernet with dark berried fruits, hints of mint and leafiness. The palate is full and stylish showing Shiraz sweetness and plumminess, but finishing with long fine tannins. Perfect now, but will certainly cellar over the next 5-10 years. A perfect food match with a roasted rack of lamb.

#1 in The Big Red Wine Book (2009/2010) Top 100 Reds Under $20

Yalumba has a long history of making fine cabernet-shiraz blends, and this new wine is an excellent addition. It's 63% cabernet sauvignon with the remainder shiraz. A beautiful example of this classic blend. It has power and structure, an enormous amount of length, and terrific, supple texture. It shows perfectly how well cabernet sauvignon and shiraz complement each other. Savoury, dusty, curranty and pure. This would make an excellent choice for the cellar. Drink: 2011-2016. Price: $19.95. Alcohol: 13.5%. Seal: Screwcap. Value * * * * * Score: 94 Points; The Big Red Wine Book; Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh.

The 2007 is again about two-thirds Cabernet and one-third Shiraz and again has the same fruit source as ‘The Sig’. Perhaps a debate for another day but why aren't more companies producing this quintessential Australian style as this really is the ducks guts. A teeth staining deep purple the leaf and dark chocolate. While the ripeness of the generous fruit is evident the savouriness kicks in right on cue, the flavour lasting in the mouth many moments after the wine has disappeared. Just like the previous 2006 vintage the head says drink it over the next decade though the mouth says breathe it for an hour and drink this excellent wine now. Drink: Now-2018; Quality: Excellent; BW; WineStar© April 2009

I noticed a few searches for "Scribbler" going down on The Wine Front so, being a pro-active sort of lad, wasted no time in touching up Yalumba for a taster (as they say in the industry, and often they are made of good fruit too, those tasters). Anyway, the wine turned up promptly and on a Tuesday, delivered by a particularly portly panting puffing pugnacious sort of porter. And by this I mean a typically out of condition courier who munted and moaned like she'd just climbed Everest after achieving the summit of our house, namely the front door, in order to deliver this bottle. I hope you all appreciate her brave sacrifice. Blackcurrant, red fruit, leaf, tobacco, cedar and nuts - a civilised smelling sort of wine offering the best of both worlds. It's medium bodied and quite juicily red fruited but rubbed back with savoury tobacco and olive flavours. Has some of those chunky grippy 2007 tannins but offers them with real drinkability and ease. Long and dry on the finish but the tannins cleanse and square the wine off. No alcohol or oak excess and 100% yum. Beautiful wine and a bit of a bargain too." 92 points Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, 31 March 2009
