    Heggies Eden Valley Riesling 2009

    Heggies Eden Valley Riesling 2009

Owned by the Hill Smith family since 1971, Heggies has been one of the most consistent producers of high quality riesling. An expressive bouquet with ripe blossom aromas leads into a palate which gathers pace as it streams to a vital and intense conclusion, lime/citrus flavours sustained by excellent acidity. From Eden Valley, SA Drink to 2019 with grilled King George whiting 95 points, $19.95, Screwcap, 12% alc; 95 points – The Weekend Australian November 14-15, 2009

The Eden Valley’s unique contribution to Australian Riesling is monumental. Heggies is a tremendously challenging vineyard, not an easy one to manage for the growers, but the final wine is a most splendid Riesling. Each grape variety has it's own programme of care according to its position in the vineyard. Working with the natural surroundings rather than against them is the driving force. Every factor is taken into consideration, to grow the most perfect fruit, and to ultimately capture the flavour and balance of the grapes in their purest essence

Through the use of innovative viticultural practices, working to capture the unique terroir of this challenging single site vineyard, the Heggies Viticultural team have produced a wine that is fine and balanced, with enduring minerality and strong regional expressiveness. Grapes are picked in the cool of the night and swiftly transported back to the winery. There is minimal handling of the exclusively free run juices from the pressings. A fermentation at cool temperatures using aromatic yeasts prior to the blending stage, early at the completion of vintage. At Heggies there are a number of blocks of Riesling available, ensuring that the finished wine is of consistently excellent quality each year

Lively citrus blossom aromas, lemongrass and white flowers. Characters which are peculiar to the Heggies site flourish, this release expresses a touch more floral notes than previous vintages. The palate carries exceptional weight, opening with bright citrus, zestiness and fullness of fruit. Fine and balanced, finishing with enduring mineral notes that linger.
