The Hyatt Wine of the Year Awards; With three awards, Grant Burge Wines from the Barossa Valley was the most prolific award winner of the 2007 Hyatt/Advertiser SA Wines of the Year Awards. With both the Judges’ Panel and Consumers’ Panel awards for its 2007 Thorn Eden Valley Riesling it was only one of three wineries to obtain “double billings from both judges and consumers and then became the only wine company with three awards. Commenting today, Grant Burge said: “This is a triple treat and comes hot on the heals of the Thorn Eden Valley Riesling being awarded a Five Star rating by noted Australian wine judge, James Halliday. Trophy, Class Riesling Category, 2007 Hyatt/ Advertiser SA Wines of the Year - Judges Category A fragrant flower garden of delicate white blooms with a touch of candied lemon peel, grapefruit and anise. Incredibly soft mouthfeel with elements of baby powder and smooth, white chalkiness. Judges included Stephen Henschke (Henschke), Andrew Hardy (Petaluma), Andrew Wigan (Peter Lehmann), Sue Hodder (Wynns) and Tony Love (The Adelaide Advertiser). Top 100 New Releases April/May 2008: A typical lemony, honeysuckley Eden Valley riesling with subtle herbal notes. The taste is light and refined, with citrus flavours and soft, well-balanced acidity. This could reward cellaring too. 91 points; Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller WINE Magazine, April/May 2008 The Eden Valley is renowned for producing some of Australia's finest Riesling styles, as the cooler climate and higher rainfall, provide ideal conditions for Riesling. The fruit for this wine, is sourced mainly from 30 year old vines in the Thorn Family Vineyard, and the Stephens 'Wyncroft' Vineyard. About half of the fruit was whole bunch pressed to maximise the elegance of the wine. The resultant wine is pale straw in colour, with lime green highlights, this delicate wine has aromas of lemon zest with typical Eden Valley floral, spice and mineral characters. The palate shows similar flavours, with crisp acidity leading to a fresh, dry finish. Already showing excellent balance, integration and length, this stunning wine may be cellared for five to ten years, or enjoyed now with fresh natural oysters with squeezed lime and lemon juice.
