Hardys Oomoo McLaren Vale Shiraz 2006

Hardys Oomoo McLaren Vale Shiraz 2006

The third belter in a row for this label, add the 2002 into the mix and it must surely be one of the most consistently excellent sub-$15 wines on the market. The 2006 screams McLaren Vale with the signature chocolate and deep berry elements. It has settled beautifully over the last 12 months and while being a good short term keeper (5-8 years) it really is hard to keep one’s paws of it following a decent decant and especially at this price. This incidentally scored 94 points with James Halliday a rare feat for a red of this price. Drink: Now-2014; Quality: Excellent BW; WineStar© November 2008

Deep crimson red with ruby purple hues, this wine displays aromas of ripe plum, fruit cake spice and dark chocolate, enhanced by vanillin oak. The palate is a mirror image of the bouquet, showing ripe, dark fruits complexed by hints of cinnamon spice and black pepper. Subtle use of both French and American oak provides a savoury structure with great persistence and length. Will reward patient cellaring of up to five years.

Yet another success for this label; crammed full of regional black fruits, dark chocolate and a flick of oak; the tannins still pronounced, but are in balance and will soften. Cork. 14% alc. Rating 94 points Drink 2017 $16.99 Date Tasted Sep 07. James Halliday Wine Companion
