    Chandon Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2007

    Chandon Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2007

This is dangerously easy to drink and is only going to get better. It is a generally accepted and expected rule with tasting notes that one describes the colour, bouquet and palate characteristics before making general comments but I've gone about face because all I could think about was how enjoyable the wine was to consume due in no small part to the most inviting nose, the modest alcohol level and a line of elegance that goes from start to a long, long finish. For the geeks, the wine is a youthful straw colour with an abundance of aromas leaping out of the glass, mainly of white fleshed peach and stone fruit with hints of grapefruit and even pear. A touch of malo adds the merest hint of any fat on this wine which is largely a lesson in elegance. Super value under $30. Drink: Now-2015; Quality: Excellent; BW; WineStar© October 2008

An elegant varietal style with complexity from barrel fermentation, lees stirring and ageing in French oak barriques. A pale straw yellow with green tints. Complex aromas of fresh peaches, grapefruit rind and cinnamon combine with spicy vanillin oak. Stone fruit and citrus flavours develop on the palate and are enhanced by a creamy texture derived from 6 months of lees stirring. Subtle flint and savoury flavours extend the palate and provide a lingering, crisp finish. Cellaring potential is 5-8 years.

Bright green-straw; a very fragrant bouquet leads into a totally delicious palate with a cascade of nectarine and white peach flavours; has great length and finesse. Screwcap. 13% alc. Rating 96 points; Drink 2020 $28 Date Tasted Aug 08 James Halliday Wine Companion

For many years the still wines from Domain Chandon were sold under the Green Point label. This year marks the first release of the Domain Chandon-labelled still wines. This is sourced from a number of vineyards in the Yarra Valley. The wine were whole bunch-pressed for cold settling. The wine was fermented in 15% new and 85% old oak mixed-sized barrels. The wine had the whole recipe of wild, malo and solids fermentation with lees stirring. The wine aged for 9 months before blending. The alcohol is 12.8% and the bottle is naturally sealed in screwcap. Medium straw colour. Rich melon and peach with lemon aromas combine with quality oak on the nose. The palate builds as the wine airs showing excellent breadth across the palate before a great long finish. An enjoyable young chardonnay showing scope for further improvement with time in the cellar. Quality: 91/100 (Excellent) MA StarPanel© October 2008

Pure as a crisp spring day – there’s nothing funky here. It tastes of melons and nectarines and lemons, the acidity bright and clear and any sense of oak kept to low key levels. It sings nicely through the finish and offers good value, if little excitement. Admirable elegance. Drink: 2009-2012. Rated : 91 Points Price : $26.95 Closure : Screwcap Drink : 2009 - 2012 Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front
