    Houghton Crofters Cabernet Merlot 2004

    Houghton Crofters Cabernet Merlot 2004

Houghton Crofters brings together a rich heritage and contemporary winemaking style to produce wines of outstanding quality and character. Sourced from the premium South West and Great Southern regions of Western Australia, the classical varietal blends highlight the diversity of Western Australian fruit source with elegance of wine style.

Named after the original farmhouse and stables built in 1863 by Colonel surgeon Dr John Ferguson. The buildings, featuring hand made clay bricks and sheok roof shingles, were modeled on the Scottish “Croft” design and built from local materials found near Perth. Today the Crofters Homestead is the proud home of Houghton wines. Western Australia’s most awarded wine producer.

Deep ruby with a touch of purple, this wine displays lifted red currant on the bouquet with a hint of wild strawberry and briary characters, supported by fine French oak. The palate shows soft, round flavours and fine tannins with lots of cigarbox, olive and red berry characters.

The Houghton Crofters range of wines is those wines that our winemakers like to make and drink themselves. They depict the essence of each variety or in the instance of blends the best synergy that can be extracted from the contributory varieties. The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is no exception. Richly flavoured, this classic blend demonstrates the remarkable flavours and structure of this elegant, cool climate wine.

Medium- to full-bodied; a complex wine with strong fruit and strong oak inputs immediately apparent; blackcurrant and a touch of licorice with firm, ripe tannins in support. Cork. 14.5% alc. Rating 93 points Drink 2024 Date Tasted Mar 07 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion

Likely to become quite classy, this elegant and finely crafted cabernet blend matches blackberry and dark cherry-like fruit with cedar/vanilla oak and dusty undertones of dried herbs and menthol. Long and firm, with a powdery chassis of chalky tannin beneath its slightly closed and herbal palate, it’s likely to fill out, finding more richness and balance. (Western Australia, 17.2/90, drink 2012-2016) Jeremy Oliver
