Escarpment Pinot Noir 2006

Perfume, elegant fruit flavours, and soft ripe tannins are all hallmarks of this exceptional Pinot Noir. It was harvested from our Te Muna Road property, Cleland and Bunny vineyards in Martinborough. A small harvest has created typical Escarpment style with ripe fruit and attractive texture, due to an extended warm ripening season. Traditional open topped fermentation combined with intensive hand plunging and gentle pressing has all combined to insure a most arresting wine. It was elevated in 100% French oak of which 30% was new for 12 months.

Inspired by the classic wines of Burgundy, this Pinot noir will cellar gracefully for up to 10 years gaining spice and complexity. The wine is a true reflection of both Martinborough’s unique terroir and the skills and experience of winemaker Larry McKenna.

Good dark red with ruby highlights. Piercing aromas of blackberry, raspberry, sandalwood and pungent herbs. Sweet, spicy and downright sexy, with lovely inner-mouth floral lift to complicate the raspberry fruit. Finishes long, with dusty, suave tannins and enticing mineral bite. With its terrific lift and energy, this reminded me of a top grower Beaujolais from the outstanding 2005 vintage. Stephen Tanzer
