One of the top half dozen Shiraz’s in Australia. The site climate of the Mount Langi Ghiran vineyards produces wines which have tremendous depth and complexity: there are pepper and spice notes, but there are also all of the lush ripe fruit flavours running from cherry to liquorice which a top Rhone Valley maker would immediately recognise and appreciate...A maker of outstanding cool-climate peppery shiraz, crammed with flavour & vinosity, and very good Cabernet Sauvignon. The Shiraz points the way for cool-climate examples of the variety. James Halliday

Powerful purple colour; the same seamless flow of fruit, oak and tannins as in the preceding vintages; the flavours range through red cherry, blackberry, spice, pepper, tamed by lively acidity & fine tannins. Screwcap. Drink: to 2020. 96 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion 2008

I'm sure it used to flatter makers of quality Central Victorian Shiraz to be compared to Hermitage in the Northern Rhone but after one experiences a wine like this it can also be considered a travesty given the absolute quality which, lets be fair, wouldn't buy you the packaging of a genuine quality Hermitage. Pepper and spice and all things nice. Lashings of generous and complex fruit characters ably supported by a perfect oak backbone. I can see the crowd pleasing aspects of this which lead to a stack of major awards but I can also see some beautiful fruit and balance that really belies its price point. It will be fascinating to watch this evolve and rather than list a definitive drinking window, I'd drink a bottle a year for the next 12 (then kick myself for getting into them too early). Drink: Now-2020; Quality: Exceptional BW; WineStar© April 2008

Ghiran’s releases this year are like an entire Album of greatest hits and the Blue Label is the title track. Controlled, spicy and red fruited, this is probably the most compact yet expressive wines in our list this year, and it’s the finest wine ever made in Mount Ararat! Taste 2008, Matthew Jukes & Tyson Stelzer

Dark, dense purple. Blackberry and mulberry fruits interlaced with dark plum characters with mixed spice and hints of pepper. Extremely complex and typical of the site. Boldly structured tannins on the palate, with ripe blackberry fruits, spice and tight acidity adding length and definition. Complex savoury characters in the background will evolve with time. Old Vine fruit grown in the Old Block. Long cold soaks and gentle plunging have led to a wine with terrific tannic structure and length of palate. Careful selection of barrels from four specific French coopers has added layered spice and complexity to the wine without overshadowing the bright fruit elements. Cellar up to 20 years.
