The Pousse d’Or domaine at Volnay was established in 1954. Its vineyards are anything but ordinary, consisting as they do mainly of premier and grand crus in the villages of Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Corton, Pommard, Volnay, Puligny-Montrachet and Santenay. The domaine’s 18 hectares yield 90,000 bottles annually and are managed in a spirit of respect for terroir.

Le Domaine de la Pousse d’Or can be traced back to the Dukes of Burgundy and the year 1100. Since 1997, its new owner Patrick Landanger has invested considerable resources both in the vineyards themselves and in the arrangements for vinification and elevage.

The 2014 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru comes from 1.45 hectares of vine planted in 1979 and 1987, and it matured in 30% new oak. This offers more red berry fruit on the nose compared to the Corton-Bressandes, perhaps more generous and rounded, softer even. The palate is again very supple on the entry with quite rich black cherry and raspberry confit notes, with hints of raisin and fig in the background; it is a grand cru that just wants to give. I would have preferred a little more restraint on the finish, but it is certainly a Corton that will satiate the senses. Rating: 90-92 Points; Date Tasted: Dec 2015; Drink: 2018-2032; Neil Martin - #222

In contrast to the nose of the Bressandes this is more obviously wooded and while it's not enough to dominate the more overtly sauvage-inflected dark berry fruit, earth and spice aromas, it's not subtle. There is outstanding density and even more muscle present on the even bigger and richer flavors that also possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the copious amount of dry extract present on the sappy, complex and very serious finale. This is a big wine with firm tannins to accompany it yet the extract is such that it should be more than capable of not only absorbing the wood treatment but buffering the tannic spine as well. Note well though that this is not a wine to drink in its youth. Rating: 94 Points; Date Tasted: April 2016; Drink: 2029+; Issue: 62; Don't Miss!; Allen Meadows - Burghound
