Forest Hill Estate Chardonnay 2011
The 2011 Chardonnay fruit was handpicked in pristine condition, refrigerated overnight and whole bunch pressed to allow gentle extraction. The juice was then transferred directly into Burgundian oak barrels and temperature controlled to ensure a slow fermentation process. This allows for the development of more complex flavours and seamless oak integration. Post fermentation the lees were stirred gently once a week until the balance between oak, lees and fruit characters was achieved. Malolactic fermentation was not carried through so the vibrant natural acidity was preserved. The wine was fined with isinglass just prior to bottling.
Brilliant medium straw with green hints. Lifted aromas of fresh stone fruit, complemented by citrus blossom characters. The mouth feel is long and generous, well supported by natural acidity and follows on to a long mineral and stone fruit finish. The wine is certainly approachable now, though will age gracefully over the next 8 - 10 years.
Mid-gold, green hue; the bouquet offers citrus blossom, charcuterie and a touch of pine resin; the palate is deeply textured, and the concentration of fruit undeniable; time is needed for full integration. Drink by: 2018; Price: $32.00; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 92 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
