O'Leary Walker Polish Hill River Riesling 2016
O'Leary Walker Wines was established in 2000 by winemakers David O'Leary and Nick Walker. With over twenty five years experience and established reputations making premium wine with the big companies, these two long time friends decided to take control of their own destiny and craft small batches of wine from some of the best vineyard sites in South Australia. With a great leap of faith they are now doing exactly what they set out to.
Pale straw in colour with steely green tinges. Delicately perfumed with a hint of musk and bath salts. Textured with orange rind, lemon, lime and spice. Delicate with crisp natural acidity and balanced finish.
David O'Leary and Nick Walker are masters of consistency when it comes to producing outstanding Clare Valley rieslings at exceptionally reasonable prices - and the 2016 vintage is no different. The Polish Hill wine just edged its Watervale sibling this time around; it has wonderful purity and perhaps a tad more cool-climate elegance. You'll find classic floral and citrus notes, intense minerality and crisp, but not intrusive, acid. Pair this with pan-fried flathead. Ready to go. Right this minute. $25; Winsor's Choice; Winsor Dobbin
I didn’t realise, but most of the fruit in this wine is organically-grown, and some even certified. A portion has been organically grown since the 1970s (uncertified). There you have it. This is the pick of the Watervale vs Polish Hill tussle in 2016 from O’Leary Walker. It feels more ‘mineral charged’ with its wet slate, mineral water and granite like inflections, though there’s plenty of pretty florals and crunchy green apple going on too. It’s got intense, limey tang to its acidity. It’s wildly perfumed, juicy then breathtakingly lean, tight, finishing powdery-chalky dry. It’s set up in a dart-shaped thrust of vigorously energetic riesling. Yum. Alcohol : 11.5%; Price : $25; Closure : Screwcap; Drink : 2016 - 2031; Rated : 93 Points; Mike Bennie; The Wine Front
