Planted in 1972 on the high country of the southern Barossa, Mountadam is Australia’s oldest cool climate Chardonnay vineyard. The inspired planted are over a meager 20ha on a cool rocky ridge rising to almost 600m above sea level.
Mountadam has some of the most enviable resources available for Chardonnay with many varietal clones, aged vineyards and geographical aspects. In blending this wine, a balance of the fruit aromas and flavor is sought, capturing the exquisite characteristics of the Chardonnay grape without the influence of oak. Intense lively fruit aromas carry through on the palate, which displays ripe apple, pear and peach characters with a distinct fresh acidity, typical of cool climate Chardonnay.
From the 16 individual Chardonnay vineyards on the estate, 5 vineyard components were selected to make this wine. Harvesting occurred at optimal fruit flavor over a two week period starting on the 26th February. Picking the grapes in the cool of early morning followed by a gentle pressing a long cool 4 week fermentation with our natural cultured yeast, helps retain maximum grape flavors. This Unoaked wine shows the crispness and concentration of ripe Chardonnay.
