Maxwell Silver Hammer Shiraz 2014
The Maxwell Silver Hammer Shiraz delivers all the hallmarks that make the combination of this variety and the McLaren Vale region so famous. Rich purple and red in colour. The bouquet is abundant with plum, mulberry and red cherries, coupled with hints of mocha and vanilla. The palate has an abundance of generous flavours, a focus on juicy red fruits, plum, berries and complex savoury spices and a hint of vanilla. The mouth filling flavours are well balanced, full bodied with a soft finish. The result is a wonderfully generous and approachable wine with excellent depth of flavour, fine silky tannins and fruit length.
Matured for 16 months in new and used French and American oak. Full-bodied and robust, picking the eyes out of a typical McLaren Vale shiraz; licorice, dark chocolate, savoury/tarry nuances and firm, but ripe tannins are the architecture for the blackberry and plum fruit, positive oak the icing on the cake. Terrific value. Drink By: 2034; Price: $20.00; Date Tasted: 08 Jan 2016; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 94 Points; James Halliday; Wine Companion
Seamless wine with plum and redcurrant notes filling the mouth with flavour. Coffee-cream oak is modestly-but-smartly applied. Dried spice notes make an appearance, as does a shimmer of alcohol. All up, it’s good drinking and value. Alcohol : 14.5%; Price : $20; Closure : Screwcap; Drink : 2016 - 2021; Rated : 90 Points; Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front
