Mac Forbes Gruyere Pinot Noir 2012
This 1.6ha hectare site is also planted with MV6 Pinot Noir, this time in 1996. It's a dry-grown site and has always been one of Mac's core, micro-managed vineyards. Although Mac now has a clear preference for the cooler, sheltered sites of the upper Yarra when it comes to Pinot, this is vineyard that can clearly produce wines of perfume and fragrance with earthy tones and fine, sinewy tannin. The site has a gentle northerly aspect with an elevation ranging from 90-112m and a soil profile of grey, sandy loam with siltstones and ironstones. Not as sweet fruited as the Coldstream, this nonetheless offers excellent texture with layers of deliciously inky, dried cherry fruit, some savoury, sappy complexity and a more compact structure. Again a terrific example of this vineyard.
Bright, clear colour; the aromas are of dark fruits, with a similar register on the palate of satsuma and blood plums, black cherry a minor contributor; there are distinctly savoury notes of earth and spice that will add to the complexity of the bouquet and palate as the years go by. 12.5% alc; drink to 2020; $70; Rating: 97 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
