Located on the edge of the estuary of the river Gironde, Château Loudenne is one of the most endearing sites of the Medoc. Its notoriety has been established for 400 years. Chateau Loudenne spreads on a wonderful terroir of 326 acres of which 143acres of vineyards.
This is my favourite sub-$50 Bordeaux right now, a blend of almost equal parts merlot and cabernet sauvignon, with a touch of cabernet franc and malbec. 16 months in 30% new oak barrels keeps the wood influence subtle, building a tannin presence for medium-term potential. It’s a classically elegant style of varietal fruit character, clean, well made, fruit-driven and varietal. Drink: 2015-2018; Price: $47; Rating; 92 Points; Tyson Stelzer
