The suppression of malolactic fermentation allows this almost impossibly complex wine to have such a long life, reaching its peak between 20 and 30 years of age. Straw-gold in colour, ripe fruits, dried fruits, biscuit and caramel all come through on the complex bouquet, and flow into the palate. This has explosive length and intensity, the finish long, the aftertaste amazing. It is the magic of Krug which produces such a lovely wine from an ordinary vintage. 98 points, $525; Halliday’s Top 100 Wines for 2009 – The Weekend Australian November 14-15, 2009

The second vintage in history in which chardonnay has led, making this a Krug of sensational fruit velocity and power, astonishing complexity, yet utter control and agility. It froths with whitewash of mouthfilling, salty minerality, lingering and splashing long and strong. If you’ve always wished, now is your moment. Drinking: 2012-2028; Rating: 98 Points; Tyson Stelzer

The first chardonnay-dominant Krug vintage in two decades, providing streamlined poise and a crescendo of minerality in the midst of thunderingly expansive complexity and decadent richness. Krug remains the king. Rating: 98 Points; Wine100, November Issue

Shows gorgeous aromas of lemon, peach, toast, leather and spices. The attack is rich and forceful, backed by a racy structure that keeps this pure and drives the finish. Perhaps not as expansive on the aftertaste, but long nonetheless, with spice and mineral notes lingering. Still needs time. Best from 2012 through 2035. Rating 96 Points; Wine Spectator

An ornate and powerful vintage for the cellars of krugistes, this is breathtaking Champagne. It is as layered and complex as a grand cru Burgundy, though more searing in its adolescent acidity, leaving a tooth buzz in its wake. With air, the layers of the wine begin to show in flavors of marzipan, fresh cream and an underlying essence of limestone. It's severe on the surface, kinder underneath. Altogether complete and needing five to ten years of bottle age to build into its full grandeur. Rating 96 Points; Wine & Spirits
