Kooyong Single Vineyard Meres Pinot Noir 2012
The Kooyong vineyard and winery, established in 1996, was acquired by the Gjergja family in 2004. Kooyong is located in Tuerong, towards the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula. The majority of the forty hectare site is planted to Pinot Noir, with a substantial area of Chardonnay and several small sections of Pinot Gris.
All Kooyong and Port Phillip Estate wines are entirely domain grown, vinified and bottled. The wines in the Quartier stable are produced from estate grown fruit and fruit from neighbouring vineyards.
The Kooyong vineyard is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong, on Miocene sedimentary soils. Our wines are made from domain grown, handpicked grapes and aim to manifest terroir: the integration of our geology and soils with the macroclimate of our region, the mesoclimates of the various sites within our vineyard and the weather of the annual grape growing season. Our cultural operations in the vineyard and practices in the winery endeavour to articulate these unique characteristics diligently, respectfully and without artifice.
Aromatically generous, the 2012 Meres leads off with intense cherry and citrus flavours. There is a delightfully seductive character to the juicy and elegant middle palate that is backed up with a firm tannic structure and energetic finish. Whilst retaining the classic hallmarks of past releases, this release is reaching the higher echelon of this vineyard and showing great promise for the future. More revealing in its youth compared to the other two Pinots, it will greatly benefit from time in the bottle.
