Kalleske Pirathon Shiraz 2014
In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock. They are one of the regions leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa's best quality grapes. After six generations of growing grapes, winemaker and seventh generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine.
Pirathon is an ancient word for pinnacle and we believe Shiraz is the pinnacle grape of the Barossa and that the north-western Barossa is the pinnacle sub-appellation for Shiraz. Pirathon Shiraz is a full bodied wine encompassing the great flavour, texture and structure of the north-western Barossa. Higher altitude, gullies, hills, slopes, and undulations provide different topographies, microclimates and individualistic parcels of grapes with unique flavours and characters from their own site.
The grapes for Pirathon Shiraz are traditionally handcrafted in open top fermenters and basket pressed before maturing in barrel. Each vineyard adds its own exclusive dimension to Pirathon Shiraz and combined they produce the ultimate blend. Pirathon Shiraz showcases and celebrates the pinnacle north-western Barossa region and pinnacle Barossa grape with a complex and distinguished wine.
Pirathon Shiraz 2014 is dark purple-black in colour. The perfumed boquet is uplifting and indicative of a complex wine with aromas of blackberry, plum, blueberry, rose perfume, chocolate, subtle oak and a hint of spice. The full-bodied palate is rich and mouthfilling with plenty of ripe dark fruits. Background oak barrel characters compliment the bright fruit flavours. There are fine integrated tannins giving the wine a solid structure. This is an extremely balanced Shiraz with fruit, oak and tannin working together to provide harmony. A very lengthy finish completes a powerful but opulent wine. Pirathon is a paramount expression of north-western Barossa Shiraz that will reward time in the cellar for 5-10 years.
