Juniper Estate Crossing Shiraz 2014
Juniper Estate is a producer of premium wines in Wilyabrup, the heart of the remote, environmentally pristine Margaret River winegrowing area lying in the south west corner of Australia about 270km south of the state capital, Perth. When the vineyard was planted in 1973 (under its original guise of Wright's), it was one of only six Margaret River wine producers (along with Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle, Cullen, Moss Wood and Woodlands); by contrast, today the region boasts in excess of 200 vineyards. No sub-region has been historically more important to the success of Margaret River than Wilyabrup, where the first vineyards were planted and wineries built and which continues to be home to a disproportionately large number of famous, usually small, vineyards.
The Crossing wines fulfill a different purpose from the Estate wines. They are our more easy drinking style with an appropriately lower price tag. We would like them to be enjoyed every day while the Estate wines remain the pinnacle of our ambitions, spending more time in oak (in the case of the reds) and being released later.
The dense dark purple/red colour gives strong suggestion of good things to come, including fruit characters of blackberry, ripe raspberry, dark cherry and plum, a floral lift of violets with a lick of mocha vanillin oak and hints of pepper, liquorice and dark chocolate. The palate has a velvety texture is full black fruits of cherry, plum, blackcurrant and blackberry along with hints of violets, white pepper and anise finishing with fine tannins and lingering flavours.
Substantial serve of sweet black cherried fruit wrapped in a bun of dried, woody spices. You get flavour, you get personality, you get richness and shape. Not bad given the relatively modest asking price. Rating: 93 Points & Special Value Star; Drink by: 2025; Price: $22.00; Date Tasted: March 2016; Alcohol: 14%; James Halliday Wine Companion
