Inkwell I & I Shiraz 2012
The Inkwell 2012 I & I Shiraz is a new single vineyard blend made from all four blocks of Shiraz at Inkwell. It is magical McLaren Vale - chocolate, licorice and tar with lifted notes of blueberry and violet found only when the fruit is picked at the right moment from the Pirrimimma sandstone and Ngaltinga formations beneath our vines. This was picked by hand over three weeks to capture the special flavors from each parcel - tar and licorice from Block 1, violets from Blocks 2 and 3, savory and blueberry from Block 4. To showcase the fruit, we matured it in 13% new, 37% second use and 50% neutral French barrels for 20 months. 14.5% alc/vol.
This is 100% shiraz, and the blend that the winemaker deems best, from the other blends, if you get the drift – all estate fruit. The last three years the picking has been earlier. I & I for the song by Bob Dylan, and also because Irina, Dudley Brown’s wife’s initial is I so it is him and her. Awww. I like to think it is more about the oneness of Jah and that Brown is a closet Rastafari. Coffee, mocha, choc-berry characters. Perfume is heady and attractive. Fleshy and succulent to taste, excelllent in texture, silky but rich, finishes with spice and chalky pucker. Medium bodied, smooth, compact and feels very fancy. Rating: 92 Points; Drink: 2014-2024; Price: $40.00; Date Tasted: June 2014; Alcohol: 14%; Mike Bennie - The Wine Front
