Home Hill is very much a Tasmanian boutique vineyard, winery and restaurant situated on the gentle slopes of the beautiful Huon Valley. Terry and Rosemary Bennett established Home Hill planting their first 0.5Ha in 1994, increasing these planting’s to 3 Ha of Pinot, 1.5Ha of Chardonnay and 0.5 Ha of Sylvaner. As a low altitude area the Huon Valley has a cool temperate climate with moderate summers, very high sunshine hours and mild winters.
The long slow ripening period allows for optimal development of fruit flavours. The Bennett family has spared no expense in developing Home Hill to produce award winning wines, with unique viticultural practices employed to reduce yields, a brand new state of the art winery and most importantly the wine making skills of Gilli Lipscombe.
The Kelly’s Reserve Pinot Noir is made from a blend of the top barrels from the vintage, always with one small section of the vineyard at its core. The 2015 Reserve has a brooding intensity that reflects the low yields and small berries from the season. An intriguing nose of dark and blue fruits, a hint of cherry oak and an earthy complexity are followed on the palate by very fine but dense tannins to give a structured Pinot Noir that has the capacity to be cellared for up to 15 years
This is a selection of the best barrels, with one small section of the vineyard always providing the core of the wine. It is a monumental pinot with a turbocharged V12 engine throbbing gently but insistently as it waits for the chequered flag. It captures every corner of the mouth with its brooding array of foresty red, purple and blue fruits, the powerful tannins fully justified and giving the wine a 20-year future. Keep your hands off it as long as you can. Drink by: 2035; Date Tasted: Sept 2016; Alcohol: 13.9%; Rating: 98 Points; Special Value Star; Top 100 Wines of 2016; James Halliday Wine Companion
