The acclaimed Henschke family, foundation members of Australia’s First Families of Wine, was one of the pioneering families of South Australia when Johann Christian Henschke migrated from Silesia (Germany in 1841). Each generation has contributed to the legend with fourth generation Cyril Henschke pioneering varietal, single-vineyard wines in the 1950s, most famously Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace Shiraz. Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen and his viticulturist wife Prue have won many awards for their talent, innovation and integration of vineyard and winery. They lead the way with environmental, biodynamic and organic principles. Henschke wines are handcrafted and deeply personal, reflecting the unique terroir of vineyards: the wine names tell either a personal story of the family or the cultural history of their region.

Hill of Roses is named as a tribute to Johann Gottlieb Rosenzweig, one of the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers who settled at Parrot Hill in the Eden Valley. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant the many generations that followed have rejoiced in the riches of those efforts. The wine is produced from a small selection of low-yielding, dry-grown shiraz vines from the Hill of Grace vineyard, named the Post Office block, that were a mere 12 years old when the wine was first produced in 2001 and therefore considered too young for inclusion into Hill of Grace Shiraz.

Magenta in colour, the nose is an array of dark berries, coffee bean notes, tobacco leaf, cloves and dark chocolate aromas which are still very young and coming together. Black olives and hints of roast meats emerge on the palate with sour cherries on the finish. Fine balance, excellent length, good concentration and real potential. After a day open, more red fruits arrived. This will surely impress for the next couple of decades. March 2022; Rating: 98 Points; Ken Gargett; Wine Pilot

From vines in the Hill of Grace vineyard that are too young for inclusion in the stellar Hill of Grace release. Named as a tribute to Johann Gottlieb Rosenzweig, one of the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers who settled at Parrot Hill in the Eden Valley. Aromas of prime blackberry and dark plum fruits mesh with hints of pressed flowers, red cherry and mulberry high notes, spice, sage, cassis and licorice. Medium bodied, composed and displaying a wonderful sense of grace and calm with detailed red and dark fruits, powdery tannin, impeccable balance and a pitch-perfect savoury flow on the enduring finish. Drink to: 2040; Date Tasted: Jan 2022; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 97 Points; Dave Brookes; James Halliday Wine Companion

Super concentrated yet with a lightness of touch and effortless floating palate that pulls itself together to focus through to a long finish. One of the best yet under this label. Mix of sage and rosemary with a lift of chocolate and dark plum. The tannins have a chalky minerality and the oak is deeply integrated yet it places a key role in its contribution to the structure. There is a delightful purity and brightness here. Date: March 2022; Rating: 97 Points; Ray Jordan; Wine Pilot

Medium deep crimson. Beautiful blackberry, black cherry, dried roses(!), herb garden graphite, sage, aniseed with chocolate. Lovely sweet juicy blackberry, black cherry, cassis fruits, lovely brambly, al-dente textures, attractive viscosity, mocha, cacao vanilla oak notes and linear fresh crisp acidity. Finishes minerally, long and firm with plentiful sweet fruits. Lovely structural strength and vigour, and will age beautifully. Date: March 2022; Rating: 96 Points; Andrew Caillard MW
