Head Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone Varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. The House style is one of elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by a combination of low yields, early picking, slow-winemaking and careful, gentle attention during elevage. Each Head Wine not only represents Alex Head's strong views on what makes balanced, drinkable wines but a guarantee of absolute quality, value and consistency.

From a vineyard in Moculta, and this year, no whole bunch he says. And yet, it still bears a family resemblance. Aromatic herbs like thyme and lavender – lovely perfume – iron, black and blue fruit. Medium bodied, not bunchy, but shows the family traits of firmness, minerality and a little austerity, though the fruit is there. And excellent. Dry powdery finish sprinkled with herbs. Poise and sophistication and so good to drink. If you were to buy only one of the Head Shiraz wines, this would be my recommendation. Tasted: May 2014; Alcohol: 13.8%; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2015-2025+; Rating: 95 Points; Gary Walsh - The Wine Front
