Head Wines Head Red GSM 2014
Head Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone Varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. The House style is one of elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by a combination of low yields, early picking, slow-winemaking and careful, gentle attention during elevage. Each Head Wine not only represents Alex Head's strong views on what makes balanced, drinkable wines but a guarantee of absolute quality, value and consistency.
This wine, like the ‘Head Red Shiraz’ is essentially a de-classification of the ‘Old Vine’ Grenache. The mother vineyard (containing all 3 varieties) of the blend is 100 years old and from the sub-region of Greenock. Each component is fermented separately and given a shorter elevage in oak, resulting in more fruit definition and purity. A true Bistro wine style with red fruits, peppers, Asian spice, crisp acidity and a long chewy textural finish. Minimal sulphur is used for the making of this wine and in general is only used in the last 2 months in barrel before bottling.
Juicy raspberry and cherry, raspberry rope and musk, dusting of spice, pepper and dried herb. Medium bodied, plump and succulent with juicy fruit, fine powdery tannin, a little warmth, but well folded in, and an almost Chinotto-like bitterness to the finish, which really tapers in the juicy fruit, and adds something extra. Rating: 92 Points; Drink: 2015-2020; Price: $25; Date Tasted: May 2015; Alcohol: 14.6%; Gary Walsh - The Wine Front
