Geoff Hardy's great-great-grandfather, the original Thomas Hardy, first planted grapes in SA in the 1850s and was one of the founding fathers of the Australian wine industry. In 1980, Geoff left the then family company,Thomas Hardy and Sons, to make his own way in all sectors of the Australian wine business, together with wife Fiona.

You have to go to the fine print confirmation on the back label to find this is indeed McLaren Vale, and it is a compelling example with its medium to full-bodied earthy/chocolatey black fruits reaching every corner of the mouth in a flash. Better still is the balance that will sustain the wine as it slowly matures, its oak and tannins already an integral part of the wine. Drink by: 2035; Price: $30.00; Date Tasted: Dec 2016; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 94 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday; James Halliday Wine Companion

Plum. I got it on the nose and across the palate, it was rather wonderful, soft wine easy to drink but pleasing on the finish, 93 points and at the top end of the price bracket at $30.00. Rating: 93 Points; Tony Keys; The Keys Report

Really attractive blackberry jam aromas here. Accessible but with the potential to age, thanks to well-judged extraction and naturally balanced fruit, this is an unforced but characteristic expression of McLaren Vale. Rating: 90 Points; Decanter

Deep red/purple hue and an overt oaky aroma. The palate is lean-ish and savoury, firm and drying, with abundant tannin. A good example of a traditional straighforward style of SA shiraz. Drink 2017 to 2032. Price: $30.00. Rating: 90 Points; Huon Hooke
