Recently came across this thread called "Great wines under 2 euro!"

http://expatsportugal.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=82102

Surely there is room for a GFC influenced local thread here in Australia?

Not sure that "Great wines under 5 dollars!" is comparable with Portuguese "Two buck chuck" euro dollars but lets give it a go!

Specials are OK but please tell us the name of your "steal of a wine", where you bought it and how much?

Box wine OK if 750 ml is less then 5 dollars?

Any suggestions out there...I do not want to set the standard being a newbie! Rolling Eyes

I haven't been able to stomach lowering my wine standard due to the GFC. Instead, I've been mixing with water to make them last longer. It's easier to wash the glasses than mixing with Coke.

Cheers, Ben

So Ben, what 10 dollar wines will hold up to a 50/50 mix?

Well the thing is I don't like to go for $10 wines either. Sometimes I will stoop to $40 if I'm feeling cheap. So, for example, I might be drinking a Glaetzer Godolphin mixed 8:1 to achieve the outcome. Actually a great choice since it starts out like wine cordial. I end up with a classy Barossa rose (which of course impresses the ladies no end).

Cheers, Ben

Sadly, in comparison to Australia, there are plenty of very drinkable wines available from the supermarket for under 5 Euro and even occasionally for under 2 Euro. There is nothing similar in Australia, under $15 it is mostly complete crap, under $10 undrinkable, and under $5 you're dreaming. (Although a couple of years back I did buy some very drinkable Pinot as a bin end from a Canberra winery for $5 a bottle)

Drinkable wines under $5 is just about impossible. There was a drinkable cleanskin chardonnay at Dan's for $2 once. Not sure they still have it. Next up would be Mike Press wines around $10 which has blown the budget. I can think of some other cleanskins over the years that can almost make $5 but it is a shifting market; here one day etc.

cheers

Could it be that "Great wines under 5 dollars!" is a price point that is impossible to achieve in Australia?

I was under the impression that some Aussie wines competed in this market in USA?

Not the "Two buck chuck" but the 5 dollar price range?

Is there not enough competition here or is it the fact that if you make something that is drinkable in Australia you price it accordingly?

I guess this thread was started to find some GFC absolute bottom crawlers but still very much enjoyable wines.

I think we could continue down this road but open it up a little trying to fine absolute value at bottom dollars.

Who is game enough to start?

What a great concept! Go out and find great wine for under $5 as I'm sure you'll locate a lovely winery who'll offer you a great cellar door experience, answer any queries about the wine, offer to replace any wine that you didn't feel was quite right, and generally be lovely people to deal with each time you put in an order.

Or you'll find some bin end from some bankrupted estate being flogged by a barrow boy that thinks you're a punter (read "mug").

Now where do we start? Ah yes, first the clean skins shop ...

Cheers

So Mark, apart from doing the wine tour, clean skin hunting or getting flogged by barrow boys, do you have any value recommendations for everyday drinking. Is it beneath this forum to come up with some low cost value drops? I take it that box wine is out of the question?

...Yeah. An absolutely legitimate request by the topic author. What is good for $5 or thereabouts ?

I don't know any, but I'll post details about one if I see one.

Dan Murphy has released a $2 cleanskin chardonnay and shiraz. There's a shiraz tasting on Sat in Canberra so I will be there. I'll buy one each and let you know my thoughts! Can't wait. What a great experience.

I'll feel like a teenager all over again!

I'll say it again for those with problems with the English language.

Please read slowly:-

There may be drinkable wines available for under AUD$5, but there are no GREAT wines available for less than AUD$5 at retail..

OK. I don't want to have to come back and repeat myself. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Yeah, I'm 100% sure there's not great wines under $5. But people have said that wine under $5 is undrinkable. I'm going to put that to the test. I might have to block my nose! Actually, I've never had a cleanskin so it might be interesting. I've always just figured that you can by a brand and at least know where it comes from at a good price.

Who actually makes the cleanskins? I don't even know how they work.

Davo, your reading skills disappoint me as I have to repeat myself.

Specials are OK but please tell us the name of your "steal of a wine", where you bought it and how much?

I would be happy with a very drinkable Pinot for 5 dollars from Canberra if we can find that again?

In my book that sounds like a great value wine!
