Trophy - Champion Riesling - National Cool Climate Wine Show 2014
Top Gold - National Cool Climate Wine Show 2014
High quality grapes reflect a high quality vineyard site, and the high quality wine reflects sensitive and respectful handling in the winery; the balance and length both underwrite the future of the wine, and the rewards to be gained from cellaring. Rating: 94 Points; James Halliday; Wine Companion Magazine
Another beautiful expression of riesling from this very special vineyard in Frankland River. It’s fine with powdery lemon zest and light spicy minerals on the nose. The palate has a gossamer-fine acid supporting the lingering finish. Has deceptive ageing potential too. Rating: 94 Points; Ray Jordan’s Top 100; The West Australian
One need look no further than our reigning White Wine of the Year to appreciate, not just how great Frankland River WA Riesling is - and there are none better than the 2014 examples - but also the tremendous value they reflect. Years ago, while WA Riesling in general was feted, it was always considered the more expensive cousin to examples out of Clare and Eden in SA. Not anymore. The situation is not dissimilar to WA Cabernet where quality is at an all time high yet price has remained stagnate and in some instances become even sharper.
We bring you the super premium example from Ferngrove that has managed to win the Champion Riesling Trophy and Top Gold Medal at the National Cool Climate Wine Show. As I alluded to, the Ferngrove Orchid Cossack Riesling 2014 that winery's top end, single estate Rizza which often tips the scales at $25 a pop. Pure and dry, it shows pure Riesling fruit with intense fresh lime, pink grapefruit and lemon zest with a long refreshing minerality.
