Elio Altare is one of the leading wine making figures in the Barolo zone. His wines have been awarded 31 Gamberro Rosso Tre Bicchieri Awards. A true innovator and committed to relentless continuous improvement, he has always been at the forefront of Barolo making. He was among the first wine makers in the region to travel to other winemaking areas like Burgundy in an effort to improve his own wine making processes.

The 2005 Barolo Cerretta is a new Barolo from a rented parcel in Serralunga that was vinified, aged and bottled separately for the first time in 2005. Altare is so profoundly associated with La Morra that it is fascinating to taste his first foray into Serralunga. The 2005 Barolo Cerretta positively covers every inch of the palate in a round, opulent expression of fruit. Still rather fresh and primary, the wine will require some time to come around. Menthol, licorice, minerals and tar inform the long, harmonious finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. Score: 93 Points. —Antonio Galloni, February 2010.
