Ekhidna wines are made by award-winning winemaker Matthew Rechner who was born and bred in McLaren Vale, one of the best grape growing regions in Australia. This is 33% Grenache 33% Shiraz 33% Mourvedre (McLaren Vale). This medium bodied wine shows earthy and floral notes on the nose. The palate soft and elegant with lifted ripe red berries and a touch of spice. The light presence of the mixture of American and French oak helps to display the ripe fruit flavours.
Located in the heart of McLaren Vale, Ekhidna wines are made by award-winning winemaker Matt Rechner - as are the company's beers and ciders! The goddess Ekhidna (mythology’s she viper) was half nymph, half snake, mother of all monsters and defender of vineyards. Our Ekhidna (Australia’s great nose echidna) is a truly remarkable creature; a spiny anteater with a hedgehog’s spikes, a kookaburra’s beak, a kangaroo’s pouch, a platypus’s feet, an elephant’s lifespan, and a great nose. Special Value Star - James Halliday
The Ekhidna McLaren Vale GSM 2014 is made with a third each Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre (Mataro). Medium bodied in weight it has beautiful lifted aromatics on the nose with nuances of earth and spice. A juicy, bright and spicy experience in the mouth the acidity and silky tannins are played to perfection. Excellent stuff, approachable now but still very much a pup. Drink: Now – 2020+; Quality: Excellent BW; WineStar© July 2015
Equal amounts of the varieties were matured in used French and American barriques. This is a blasphemously good $20 wine, blowing 90% of GSMs over $20 out of the value for money water; it has intensity, grace, glistening red fruits and fine tannins. It's no sin to drink it here and now, but it won't fall over any time soon. Drink by: 2024; Price: $20.00; Date Tasted: Feb 2015; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 95 Points; James Halliday; Wine Companion
